A Pursuer’s First Impression
Appearance judged as evidence
Fix sees Fogg’s calm face and matching description as signs of a clever criminal. He interprets the traveler’s behavior through the theory he already holds.
Formal distance
Fogg treats Fix as an ordinary acquaintance and has no knowledge of the pursuit. Their relationship begins with one man observing and the other unaware.
Hospitality Accepted

Hospitality Accepted
An uneasy passenger
Fogg gives Fix passage and shares provisions aboard the Tankadere, despite Fix’s secret role. The detective feels discomfort at accepting kindness from the man he suspects.
Character complicates suspicion
Fogg’s ordinary generosity does not convince Fix that he is innocent, but it makes the pursuit emotionally less simple. Professional duty and personal judgment begin to diverge.
The Rescue Witnessed

A different image of Fogg
Fix sees Fogg risk his fortune and life to retrieve Passepartout. The action challenges the detective’s picture of a man concerned only with escape.
Assistance offered
Fix helps find a sledge that can carry Fogg east. He does not abandon his legal purpose, but begins to support the traveler’s return.
The Arrest at Liverpool

The Arrest at Liverpool
Duty prevails again
Fix arrests Fogg as soon as he arrives in Liverpool, acting on the warrant. Whatever doubts he has developed, he still treats the arrest as his legal responsibility.
The journey is interrupted
Fogg’s final return to London is halted by the detective who had previously helped him. The relationship swings back into direct opposition at the moment of greatest urgency.
An Apology and a Blow

An Apology and a Blow
Innocence established
Fix learns that the real bank robber has been arrested and frees Fogg. He apologizes for the mistaken identification and its consequences.
Anger without lasting revenge
Fogg strikes Fix once, then leaves immediately to pursue the wager. The brief violence releases accumulated conflict, but the relationship ends without a prolonged feud.
